From the theme to the starry hosts and guest list speculation.
The Met Gala is the most significant event in the fashion industry, attracting leading figures not only from the world of glamour, but also music, film, art, and more. And this iconic event is set to take place in less than one week. As the celebrities line up for one of the most important fashion events of the year, they’ll have a narrow window in which to steal red-carpet attention for the benefit—figuratively and literally—of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s upcoming Costume Institute exhibit, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
It started in 1948 as a society midnight supper and wasn’t even at the Met. Fast forward 70-plus years and the Met Gala is something totally different, one of the most photographed events in the world for its head-spinning red carpet — though the carpet isn’t always red. It remains to be seen how the museum’s Great Hall will be decorated come the first Monday in May, but one thing is not in question: those entering it will look spectacular.
The Met Gala, known formally as the Costume Institute Gala, is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It is usually held by Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Its annual glamorous event serves as the perfect moment to celebrate high fashion, designers, and the industry itself.
It’s best known for the lavish outfits that the high-profile guests arrive in, each yeah fitting a different theme. Each year, around 600 guests are invited to walk the red carpet before attending the event which is known as one of the most exclusive gatherings of the year.
The Met Gala isn’t just a party, it’s a fundraiser for The Costume Institute. This year, tickets have reportedly increased from $30,000 to $50,000. A designer or brand usually pays for a table at the gala, investing from $275,000 and counting. The brand or designer then fills in said celebrities it selects to dress.
You probably won’t want to miss any details about the most-anticipated glamorous event coming soon. So, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about the Met Gala 2023 event. Also, check out some of the biggest celebrity-style moments at the Met Gala red carpets over the years.
WHEN IS THE 2023 MET GALA?
The 2023 annual Costume Institute Benefit “Met Gala” will take place on May 1st, 2023. As it is already known, the Met Gala is always hosted on the first Monday in May every year at the Met in New York, apart from in 2020, when the event was cancelled, and in 2021, when it was held in September, because of the pandemic. This year’s gala is again held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Fifth Avenue, Manhattan) in New York City.
WHAT IS THE 2023 MET GALA THEME?
This year’s Met Gala theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The aim is to pay tribute to the late former Chanel creative director, photographer, artist, and fashion designer, who died in 2019 aged 85. Besides, the Met Gala’s dress code will be “in honour of Karl. His life and work,”. Guests will be able to choose from the creative director’s vast archives at Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, Patou, and his eponymous brand, too. The idea is that guests explore the designer’s stylistic language.
Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton will be in charge of the exhibition. He emphasised it will not be a “traditional retrospective”. Amanda Harlech will be the show’s creative consultant. She worked closely with Lagerfeld for years.
“At its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments,” Andrew said. “We could not do a traditional retrospective. For one thing, I think Karl would have hated that.”
The gala’s companion exhibition will run throughout the entire month and well into July. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” will open to the public on May 5th, 2023.
WHO IS ATTENDING THE 2023 MET GALA?
The guest list is top secret. However, some of the biggest names in the business regularly attend, such as Beyoncé, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Blake Lively, Billie Eillish, Jennifer Lopez, and more. They are expected to attend this year’s Met Gala event, even though there has been no official announcement yet regarding their appearance.
The 2023 Met Gala will be co-chaired by actor Penelope Cruz, singer Dua Lipa, actor Michaela Coel, and tennis player Roger Federer, alongside Anna Wintour. The four of them will also serve as Met Gala 2023 hosts.
The red-carpet livestream, which always gives us an exclusive look at the celebrities’ most daring arrivals, will be hosted by Emma Chamberlain, LaLa Anthony, Derek Blasberg, and Chloe Fineman.
