TRENDS 2022: The Mini-Skirt is here to stay

The mini length became famous in the ’60s and ’70s, and now designers are loving it all year round.

This season’s biggest trend is small. Meet the micro mini skirt, a holdover from the early-to-mid ’00s dating styles worn by all the biggest names of that era: Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan among them.

“There’s a combination of generational desire to go back to a time in fashion when it was fun and mindless,” said celebrity stylist and Emmy Award-winning costume designer Zerina Akers of the mini’s comeback.

“It seems like there’s a group of us who are super nostalgic, and then there’s this new younger generation who are exploring and are inspired by these archival images of pop stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera or Beyoncé.” He noted, “Not to mention they make your legs look longer!”.

Micro miniskirts from the early 2000s were in heavy rotation during New York Fashion Week. Models at Theophilio wore minis made of striped knitwear and red leather, while at Kim Shui, the brand paired leather skirts with TikTok-approved scarves. Sandy Liang styled tiny cardigans with pleated miniskirts, and Saint Sintra put on foil-style skirts with sheer blouses and torn tights.

The miniskirt first gained popularity in the ’60s and ’70s as a playful and even a cultural icon for society. It signified a political youth movement where teens no longer wanted to dress like their parents. It was a rebellious garment, representing the shift in societal dynamics. For instance, Mary Quant was the first woman who pioneered 60’s fashion in London. Super short skirts and dresses became her signature look, helping to popularize the miniskirt globally.

In 2021, the emergence of the miniskirt and micro-skirt felt like a response to restrictions. It was like going back to the past, to a moment of societal rebellion when people covered their faces, but not their bellies or thighs. The sweatshirt came off, the t-shirts The designers, such as Chanel, Courrèges, Etro, Miu Miu, Prada, etc, Miu Miu, Prada, Versace, Blumarine, Sandy Liang, Missoni, Balmain and Max Mara, among others. demonstrating the appetite to show off our stems and dive back into the electricity of the world.

The mini of this moment presents a more structured silhouette. It can be low or high waisted without being afraid of color.
